Hyperdimension Neptunia was released last month here in the US and it has been very poorly received because it has been classified as an Ero-JRPG it has been, It has also been receiving horrible reviews for the “Hypersexualized”(gamespot), and “but because it’s dull and stupid and essentially based around girls made to look and sound like schoolchildren. ” (eurogamer). Oh the hypocrisy.
Neptunia is a niche PARODY game. it plays on the weaknesses of JRPG and its anime roots. Now herein is where the problem lies. When should a review be so bad when the game is simply not socially acceptable in our general community, that’s like saying that Gears of war 2 was a horrible game because it was too gory, what about Dead Space 2. These AMERICAN games are rated as some of the best games of the corresponding year, but at the end of the day they no one cares about blood and violence, or even sex as seen in GOD of WAR 3 but make it sexist, and it is all wrong, what about the other extreme of hypersexualization such as the super sexy Harley Quinn in Batman Arhkam Asylum. or the characters in the past and Upcoming Duke Nukem games. in fact recently Skins on MTV got came under fire for actually having underage kids having sex in their show, obviously that is more extreme, yet it is still getting favorable reviews.
At the end of the day, Neptunia is not a great game, subpar graphics, 2d cutscenes and the dialogue is not the best especially when butchered during the translation to English, but it is still a fun game, and worth buying for many people. and while i don’t think anyone would give it a 10 out of 10 a game should fail because of its flaws, not an opinion. Furthermore, just like any other game it was given an ESRB Rating, and they gave it a T for Teen, that means 14 plus, if the game was really as bad as it is claimed to be then would the ESRB not given it a rating of M for Mature like some of the aforementioned games?
